Jesus Sets Captives Free!
From 1989 I had been working alongside (some wonderful) people whose use of alcohol and other drugs had adversely affected their lives, and those of family, friends and the community. I saw some of these precious people freed from their life-controlling problems, just as I had been many years ago, as they put their faith in Jesus Christ, who loves us and died to pay the price for all the wrongs we have ever done. They received forgiveness, acceptance and healing by handing the reins of their lives over to Him.
However, I had never seen anyone make it who was really really far down that terrible road, and I prayed that God would show His power to save somebody who had been for years at the extreme end of alcohol addiction.
Some years later, my husband and I worked in a rehab in the Scottish Borders. There we met a very lovable, rebellious man who was a well-known alcoholic in his home town of Hawick (you might even have known him!). He had been referred to us by his GP after his health broke down. Castle Craig and other rehabs had failed to help him, but Jesus revealed to this man His love for him and he just couldn’t resist, handing his life and heart over willingly. To this day, he has never had another alcoholic drink and has, ever since, been a faithful committed care worker looking after ill, weak and vulnerable people – his life transformed by the Lord Jesus Christ from a self centred untrustworthy taker to a transparently honest and compassionate giver.
